Bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes
Convert between bytes and larger units in either decimal (KB, MB, GB) or binary (KiB, MiB, GiB) form. Decimal is what storage vendors quote; binary is what RAM and operating systems quote.
About this conversion
1 KB (decimal) = 1,000 bytes. 1 KiB (binary) = 1,024 bytes. The IEC binary prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) were introduced in 1998 to resolve the historic ambiguity. macOS reports decimal; Windows reports binary but labels it MB/GB — that is why a "500 GB" drive shows as 465 GB in Windows.
